We had the privilege of organizing the ICM 2024 Regional Conference for Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, held in vibrant Kigali, Rwanda. This gathering, co-hosted by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and the Rwanda Association of Midwives (RAM), brought together midwives, leaders, and advocates dedicated to advancing midwifery across the region. Set against the backdrop of Kigali’s Lemigo Hotel, the conference provided three impactful days of workshops, collaboration, and celebration of the essential role midwives play in healthcare. As the core Professional Conference Organizer (PCO), we were thrilled to help create a space that fostered professional growth, connection, and shared vision for the future.
The conference began with a lively Welcome Ceremony, where participants gathered to mark the start of an impactful event. Local traditional dancers added to the vibrant atmosphere, showcasing Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage and bringing an authentic energy to the opening. This gathering set a warm, collaborative tone, offering attendees the opportunity to connect with colleagues, exchange insights, and build excitement for the days ahead. The evening Welcome Reception continued this spirit, providing a friendly atmosphere for participants to make new connections and reconnect with peers.

On Days One and Two, we organized workshops focused on leadership, organizational development, and capacity-building within midwifery associations at all levels. These sessions allowed attendees—whether part of a national association or a student organization—to engage in meaningful discussions on how to enhance midwifery practice and advocate for better outcomes. French interpretation was available throughout these sessions to ensure inclusivity.
The final day featured specialized, hands-on skill-building workshops that allowed participants to refine advanced techniques directly applicable to their daily practice. These sessions were pre-registered to accommodate smaller groups, creating an environment for immersive learning.
A highlight of the event was our conference dinner on September 25 at The Hut Rooftop. With a unique blend of local and international cuisine and panoramic views of Kigali, this evening allowed everyone to relax, celebrate, and deepen connections made during the conference.
As we wrapped up the ICM 2024 Regional Conference, we were inspired by the dedication and passion of each midwife who joined us in Kigali. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this event a success and look forward to continuing the journey together at the upcoming ICM Regional Conference in #Berlin this November!
